Celebrating The Book That Started It All: The Vow That Twisted Fate

I cannot believe it's already time to start celebrating the book that started it all: The Vow That Twisted Fate!

The Vow That Twisted Fate came out on July 21st, 2021 as my debut epic fantasy novel. While I'd dabbled in self-publishing with a couple other titles, TVTTF was different.

Under the guidance of an amazing mentor, this was the book I chose to pursue an actual author career with, not just a hobby. I made social media posts, finalized a pen name, built a website, connected with other authors and readers (people who weren't just friends and family in real life), entered it in contests, got editorial reviews, and learned how to do author ads.

All of this hard work paid off in the highest-acclaimed book (critic-wise) that I've released to date:

The original first edition of The Vow That Twisted Fate released in July 2021, and I've unlocked that edition for the fifth book birthday!

The best part of putting The Vow That Twisted Fate out into the world was connecting with readers from around the world. As they read through, they left their reviews on Goodreads, retailers, Bookbub, and other places, and I've treasured them.

Whether they were positive, on the fence, or negative, I learned so much from my audience in these reviews, and I've been able to make future books better because of YOU, friends.

Then the opportunity arose for the extended edition, thanks to the Self-Publishing With Dale podcast.

Self-Publishing with Dale is a superb free YouTube-based podcast for indie authors. Dale pulls no punches on the pros and cons of the self-publishing industry, and I've followed his channel for quite a while.

Dale and MiblArt gifted me a refreshed cover for the extended edition of The Vow That Twisted Fate, which combined revised content (bringing in reviewer and reader feedback), deleted scenes that didn't make the original cut, and a more genre-appropriate cover design.

This new extended edition release on July 9th, 2023 (almost two years after the first edition). This extended edition is the current version available at most bookish retailers online HERE.

Five years is a perfect time for reflection on the original story (which was a stand-alone novel) and the future of these characters and their worlds.

I never intended for The Vow That Twisted Fate to be more than a single stand-alone novel. The story was wrapped up nice and tidy, and the characters were left to move forward from their one pivotal moment in time.

With that being said, there have been occassional side-projects (usually short stories) pop up in this world from time to time, and I always look back on this world with fondness.

I appreciate the love you've shared over the years (and continue to share) for Arlena and company, and for my books as a result.

While nothing has changed with The Vow That Twisted Fate's planned future at this time, spin-offs from within their lore are definitely at play in Starfire Express, which comes out in March 2027.

Is Starfire Express A Fairytale?

With Starfire Express: A Flame of Fae and Fang's release now coming closer and closer, I've been getting questions along the lines of "Is Starfire Express a fairytale?"

This question really made me stop and think, because while it's not a fairytale retelling, it definitely could qualify as a dark fairytale in its own right.

To be clear, Starfire Express was not written with children in mind. This piece is dark, there will be grit alongside the wonder of the magical worlds June visits. There is a romantic side-plot with a turn that may not speak to those wanting a classic, run-off-with-the-price style 'happily ever after'. The fairy godmother is, truly, without a doubt, a villain. And nobody, not even the deities June meets along her journey, is truly 'good' (except baby prince Squishy, Kanaloa's infant son, he's an ANGEL!).

Fairytales are defined by the presence of magic, mythical beings, good VS evil, and themes with moral implications, all of which Starfire Express contains.

So yes, in my mind, if you ask "Is Starfire Express a fairytale?", you could make a case that Starfire Express is a dark fairytale without the in-your-face moral lesson or 'once upon a time' beginning, but I'll leave you, my amazing readers, to be the ones to decide.

As you may have seen in my April writing roundup, Starfire Express: A Flame of Fae and Fang is continuing to pick up steam.

-As of May 2026, the first volume in my Starfire Express series is well on its way toward a much-anticipated release with an official release date announcement .

-Starfire Express: A Flame of Fae and Fang ebook pre-orders have continued to open all month long, and are now available across most major retailers here.

In other news, a new stand-alone project (a gothic historical fantasy which brings vibes/themes from The Phantom of the Opera together with Egyptian mythology and dark romance) has been coming together on the side when I'm not editing Starfire Express. If You Liked The Assassin's Creed Books, Try These Indie Books

If you liked the Assassin's Creed books, try these indie books!

Both of these amazing dark fantasy tales are five-star reads I've loved and recommend highly (and NO, this is NOT a sponsored post; I receive no kick-backs for clicks/orders on the links below).

They follow strong female main characters navigating worlds they're both comfortable in and uncomfortable in at once. The deep, character-driven nature of the stories come alongside unpredictable plots and endings that left me eager for the next books in their series.

If you've stumbled across my page, welcome! I am Katherine D. Graham, a USA Today bestselling fantasy author, developmental editor, and author coach. While I write an array of dark fantasy sub-genres (from epic to mythological to steampunk), I am most known for the following books:

My debut epic fantasy novel has a romantic side-plot, and is a stand-alone novel focusing on good VS evil and who gets to decide what evil is, exactly. A young human queen must call a company of legendary dwarven warriors from the past to her time to face the evil sorceress they banished from her world hundreds of years prior. Elves, Dwarves, Centaurs, and more make an appearance in a book about friendship, duty, and dark truths.

-Splitting Dawn

With the month having flown by, it's time for Katherine D. Graham's April 2026 writing roundup!

This month has been a big month for Starfire Express!

-I unveiled the character art I commissioned of main characters June & Hunter

-I shared some exciting news about the cover illustration (which has now been commissioned for later in 2026)

-I announced that pre-orders will be opening soon

-And I've been ploughing through the edits that will help the story shine

In other more general news:

-My new newsletter is up and running here on the site

-It's been a pleasure to reconnect with so many of you after so long away!

-I was honored to teach a new workshop for AutoCrit about writing dreams and flashbacks

-Pneumonia didn't keep me from reading (and recommending) a few new books by other authors

-And I've come back to my socials (Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube for now)

Writing can be a lonely journey if authors aren't careful, but YOU make it a joy to write and a privelege to publish! I can't wait to see where May takes us next.

I am beyond excited to announce that I have signed with and secured the cover commission with my DREAM illustrator! I can't say much quite yet about the details, but the work is set to start in the summer of 2026 (so VERY soon!).

This means you can look for a pre-order announcement in the coming weeks with a temporary working cover and the release date.
